Buttons !
Oh, the level of detail, sad really :)
Here's a bunch of buttons I've been able to find: (click for hi-res)
The most nit-picking detail I've found is that the gaiters are buttoned with brass 4-hole plain buttons APART FROM ONE !!!!
yep, the top button of his left gaiter is a different button - one marked "LEGION ETRANGERE"
The coat buttons are mostly leather domed 'football' buttons, apart from one (bottom right) which I think matches a
black bakelite button with a brass pin in the middle. I found a cream one like this and sprayed it black.
The waistcoat looks like it has patterned buttons, but I think this is a trick of the light in some photos -
the brass domed buttons I got compare very well with the pictures.
I found the best way to compare is to take a photo while trying to simulate
the lighting/angle/etc and then compare pictures (rather than staring at the screen
with a button in your hand)

RPF, Here is a close up of the original waistcoat buttons taken by

...after a lot of searching: nothing. It may be that they are really old victorian celluloid buttons (collectors items no less) or bakelite or horn or unobtanium,
so I don't hold much hope of finding any, never mind a full set of 10.
